I hate using this outdated term but this is the best example of a “win-win situation”.
The Kia Rio Cup, which had the Incheon FC winning over the Azkals via a 4-2 penalty shoot-out, raised around P2 million (roughly equivalent to $50,000) from gate receipts alone. This whole amount would be donated to the Sendong flood victims in Cagayan De Oro.
The official event sponsor, KIA, also gave P500,000 for the cause. Aside from this, they also raffled of a brand new Kia Rio for those who watched the game – much to the delight of the crowd.
Even if Incheon FC won the game, the Azkals gained lot of experience from this match-up. It has been years since any Philippine football team has gone against a South Korean team. And with a 1-1 score that forced the shoot-out, the Azkals proved that they can hold their own against one of the football powerhouses.
Congratulations to the event organizer, Dragon Promotions, and to everyone who made this event possible!
Thanks to UFL Philippines for the photo.
