In an interesting twist, Korean actress Yoon Yeo-Jeong won the Best Actress plum for her portrayal in “The Housemaid” which competed at the recent Cinemanila International Film Festival.
Yeo-Jeong’s role as Byeong-Sik, a manipulative tattle-tale housemaid was technically not the lead but her subtle yet powerful performance practically stole the show away from previous Cannes Best Actress Winner, Jeon Do-Yeon who played the central figure Eun-Yi in the movie.
There were some movie snobs who initially dismissed “The Housemaid” as nothing more than melodramatic fare – but these were mainly those who did not get the political and social manipulation based on power play that made the story stellar.
The movie also won the Cinemanila Best Director prize for Im Sang-Soo, who had earlier arrived for an intro and Q&A about his movie.
