There’s a tempting new serial Korean Drama airing on GMA7 every weekdays at 5pm – Temptation of Wife. This will surely be a hit among housewives who love tuning in to afternoon K-Dramas.
First off, it stars Jang Seo-Hee who became popular locally as writer-turned housewife Irene when the K-Drama Miss Mermaid aired locallywith Irene for its title a few years back. Jang Seo-Hee enamored audiences (including my mom) for being such a beautiful actress who has the ability to show delicate strength in her acting.
In Temptation of Wife, Jang Seo-Hee is also in familiar territory as she will once again play a housewife. Here, she stars as Angeline Goo who is from a prestigious art university. One night, her self-centered boyfriend Marcel Jung (played by Byun Woo-Min) takes advantage of her getting drunk. Angeline becomes pregnant so the two of them become forced by the circumstances to get married.
Angeline tries to be the dutiful wife in the beginning – taking special care of her husband and her in-laws. However, she slowly becomes disillusioned as she discovers more and more about the man she married. This reaches the point of no return when she finds out that her bestfriend, Heidi (played by Kim Seo-Yung) is having an affair with her husband.
Marcel and Heidi are not daunted by the revelation of their illicit affair. Instead, they plot to murder Angeline and make it appear as a suicide. Initially, it seems as if they have succeeded – but then a mysterious woman returns with the face of the woman they murdered. It is Angeline. And she is now back for revenge.
Just looking at the plot, I totally get why this garnered really high ratings in Korea (even breaking even the 40% range!). It has all the elements that can hook housewives who like watching television to pass the time. For instance, the angle of an unhappy marriage with the wife still trying to make it work is such a reflection of real life. Add the excitement of another woman – and you have a compelling story already. But what ups the ante is the failed murder of the wife by the lovers. This lays the groundwork for one of the ultimate come-on for viewers: revenge.
The cast is also quite good. I’m not a big fan of them since they tend to be in a more senior range but in terms of giving life to their characters, they really deliver. Jang Seo-Hee even bagged the 2009 SBS Drama Award Grand Prize for her performance here. Also awarded for their acting were Byun Woo-Min as Best Actor in a Serial Drama and Kim Seo-Yung for Best Actress in a Serial Drama. So you are definitely assured that the acting is spectacular here.
The local theme song is also quite well chosen if you ask me. The rendition of “Ang Pag-Ibig Kong Ito” by Frencheska Farr dramatically captures the essence of the drama. It’s a painful ride all the way to the end.
One reason why I’m steering clear of this one though is the fact that it’s a serial drama. It has a lot of episodes – 129 to be exact. I just don’t have the time and energy to emotionally invest in such a long drama. But that’s just me.
If you want a melodramatic way to pass your afternoons, this is definitely a must-see.
