I didn’t want a Kapamilya (ABS-CBN2 which airs He’s Beautiful) versus Kapuso (GMA7 which airs East Of Eden) network war, so I initially did not want to post the AGB Nielsen Mega Manila People’s Ratings last week (since the AGB Nielsen ratings is considered by hardcore ABS-CBN2 fans as “fake” or “tampered” by GMA7).

But after seeing some people in the online community saying that East Of Eden was rating better than He’s Beautiful in Mega Manila, I decided that it was necessary to clarify some misconceptions regarding the ratings of both shows. Let me start with the AGB Nielsen ratings of He’s Beautiful as shown below:

AGB Nielsen Mega Manila People’s Ratings
August 16: He’s Beautiful (3.6%) vs. Hole In The Wall (2.7%)
August 17: COMPARATIVE DATA UNAVAILABLE
August 18: He’s Beautiful (7%) vs. Hole In the Wall (3.4%)
August 19: He’s Beautiful (5.3%) vs. Hole In The Wall (2.8%)
August 20: He’s Beautiful (5.6%) vs. Hole In The Wall (3.6%)

He’s Beautiful consistently out-rated Hole In The Wall throughout the week. This means that it was the top program in its timeslot across all channels.

It was rating really well that even on its debut, He’s Beautiful was already #8 among the daytime programs viewed in Mega Manila. By the time the week ended, it was already at #4 with ratings even higher than Showtime. Which means that it was a definite hit. No use arguing there. So let’s move on to the ratings of East Of Eden which I posted below:

AGB Nielsen Mega Manila People’s Ratings
August 16: East Of Eden (6.6%) vs. Kristine (8.8%)
August 17: East Of Eden (6.7%) vs. Kristine (9.6%)
August 18: East Of Eden (7.5%) vs. Kristine (10.5%)
August 19: East Of Eden (6.6%) vs. Kristine (9.9%)
August 20: COMPARATIVE DATA UNAVAILABLE

At first glance, East Of Eden seems to have similar if not better numbers than He’s Beautiful. However, it’s important to note the obvious and consistent lead of Kristine by more than 2 points. This means that in its timeslot East Of Eden was only 2nd to Kristine.

It should also be considered that East Of Eden is a primetime show. Which means it should get higher numbers than a daytime show. Meaning yes – it has higher ratings than He’s Beautiful. But no – it did not rate better than He’s Beautiful.

Nevertheless, East Of Eden is doing much better in Mega Manila compared to the nationwide scale since its premiere episode ranked #10 among primetime programs in Mega Manila. During the last day with available data (August 19), it still remained at #10. The perceived strength of GMA7 has always been in Mega Manila. So it’s no surprise that East Of Eden which it airs has better ratings here.

But its #10 primetime ranking is still lower than the #8 daytime ranking of He’s Beautiful during its premiere, much less the #4 daytime ranking of He’s Beautiful during the last day of the regular week.

Still, the truth is: it doesn’t really matter. It’s useless to compare the ratings of He’s Beautiful and East Of Eden. They are of different program categories: one is on daytime, the other primetime.

It’s important to note that daytime and primetime have different viewers. There are more viewers for primetime since at night, most people have already gone home from work or school. This is why the top primetime programs have ratings that are usually higher than top daytime programs. So programs from different timeslot categories shouldn’t be compared directly since they have different viewers and viewership patterns.

And they’re both K-Dramas! In another universe, either of the shows could have ended up on the either of two networks. Let’s just support them both. Or just one of them that you like to watch. But let’s not trash the other show. Just like any K-Drama ending, let’s have peace! πŸ™‚

I’m glad you agree Jaypee about supporting both K-Dramas. I care about the ratings simply because it encourages the networks to keep on importing these K-Dramas. Otherwise, I’m sick of all these network wars.

By the way, just call me joon. πŸ™‚
