Remember that relatively “unknown” girl who sang “A Whole New World” with Super Junior’s Khukyun in the Korean talent show Star King way back in 2007? Well, she’s back and is now a World Star (a Korean term that refers to those who have penetrated America) with a Billboard Hit to boot!
The Philippines’ very own pride, Charice, guested once again on the show to promote her self-titled debut album and to revisit the show that also contributed in part to her success.
Carrying a placard that read “Thank You Star King ❤ Charice Pempengco” in Korean, Charice performed some of her usual crowd-pleasing Whitney Houston songs that included a medley of “I Have Nothing” and “I Will Always Love You”. While performing the latter, Charice handed the placard to Kang Ho-Dong as they replayed footage of her first guesting on the show (wherein she sang the same song to Ho-Dong). She even sang “I miss you” to Ho-Dong after the song and gave him a signed copy of her debut international album to him (Ho-Dong was overwhelmed and promised to raffle it off on Star King’s website for fans).
Also included in her repertoire was a duet of “When You Believe” with So-Hyang who sang the part of Mariah Carey.
f(x) member Luna (who was even teased for looking like Charice) also had a showdown of sorts with Charice thru the song, “One Moment In Time” after she requested to be able to sing for David Foster as well. Luna was totally blown away with the rendition by Charice of the same song, leaving the Korean in tears. Charice was magnanimous enough to assure the young singer:
“She did really, really great…she was amazing and she’s a lovely person. You don’t have to feel bad for what you heard. Because everyone in the world has a big chance…Like me, a lot of people were saying that I’m not good enough but still I believed in myself – that’s really the important thing.”
To cap it all off, Charice closed with her international Billboard hit, “Pyramid” which had everyone swaying, clapping, and dancing to the beat.
The audience that included Korean stars like members of Super Junior, CN Blue, f(x), and SHINee were totally amazed by the singer’s triumphant return – even giving her a standing ovation.
